This terrible, swampy land has continued to frustrate attempts to settle it. Rats dominate nearly every inch of the wet ground one walks upon, and it is said that horrible giant rats the size of horses (known as Rat Kings) live in the deepest parts of the marsh. Though the tales of Rat Kings are still believed to be wild exaggerations by drunk frontiersmen and explorers, everyone does know that rats and other pests and vermin do grow to extraordinary size in the Festerland. Because of these filthy creatures making up much of the area fauna, the Festerland is also known as a cesspool of disease and sickness (thus it is aptly named). It is said that other dangers lurk within the Festerland as well; will-o-wisps, hags, and worse are all blamed on the loss of multiple would-be colonists.
